Lafaek News–Dili, Timor-Leste – Ai ba Futuru project – Partnership for Sustainable Agroforestry (PSAF), co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, handed over a certificate to the winners of the agroforestry contest 2021. This activity was carried out as a form of appreciation to two young Timorese who had participated in the contest.
The Agroforestry contest launched on July 15th and ended on August 12th on GIZ Timor-Leste’s Facebook and Instagram where the public was presented with questions for a whole month and had to answer them correctly to win a prize. The objectives of this contest were to inspire the work seeking youths, to promote personal and professional development, and to promote youth participation and agroforestry.
Cisio Reis Amaral and Jose Maria R Lopes as the winner of the contest, received as a price a trip to the project areas of Ai ba Futuru to learn more about sustainable agroforestry. During their one-week trip, they visited several sites supported by Ai ba Futuru, such as community nurseries in Viqueque, the demonstration plot at the Sentru Formasaun Agricola (CDC) in Baucau and a workshop a participatory land-use planning in Manatuto.
“We are very grateful to GIZ for organizing this event that has given us the opportunity to take part in a training and field visit for one week. Although the activity was only one week, it was very interesting and useful for me. I hope GIZ with Ai ba Futuru project will continue this activity in the future, because this is very beneficial for farmers in Timor-Leste”, said Cisio Reis Amaral.
About Ai ba Futuru, The Ai ba Futuru Project is implemented in the four eastern municipalities of Timor-Leste (Baucau, Lautem, Manatuto and Viqueque), targeting 4,000 marginalised households in 40 selected Sucos. It will increase the area under agroforestry in Timor-Leste by 6,000 ha, planting a total of three million trees. Targeted participants benefit from increases in production, better employment opportunities and improved market access, thus generating higher income.
